As a seasoned athlete in my 60s, I’ve experienced my fair share of aches and pains from past injuries and the natural wear-and-tear of aging. My wife and I decided to purchase this massage gun after trying a much pricier one at a vendor booth during our county fair, and we couldn’t be happier with our choice.
This massage gun excels at relieving soreness in our necks and backs, as well as massaging our thighs, calves, and rotator cuff muscles. Both my wife and I use it regularly. The handle design makes it easy to reach those tricky spots on our backs, and I’m thrilled that I can give my wife back and neck massages again—something I used to do daily—without tiring out my hands. The large battery is impressive, lasting up to two weeks with daily use before needing a recharge.
What truly makes me appreciate this purchase is how it has aided my recovery from rotator cuff surgery over two years ago. Although the surgery was successful, my shoulder lacked the flexibility and mobility it once had, despite my diligent physical therapy routine. Using this massage gun every other day to target the muscles and tendons around my rotator cuff has started to break up stubborn adhesions, significantly improving my range of motion. Although I’m not fully back to where I want to be, I can see progress, and I’m getting closer to being able to do handstands again, which is a goal I’m eager to achieve.
There are a few additional points worth mentioning. First, I love that this massager charges via USB-C, which helps eliminate the clutter of various chargers we had lying around. We passed on several other models because they didn’t support USB charging.
Like most massage guns, it comes with a versatile range of attachments. The bullet-shaped one is perfect for targeting knots, while the broad cushioned head works well on areas with little flesh. Our favorite attachment is the one between the bullet and cushion heads, which is ideal for upper shoulders, lower back, and thick muscles. The two-pronged fork head effectively stretches adhesions in muscles and tendons. (Update May 2023:) One attachment I wish it included is a “wedge” type head, which is available in the newer version. Instead of upgrading, I bought a $20 set of massage heads compatible with Hypervolt massagers.
As for the round ball attachment, it seems more suited for personal use rather than for massaging sore muscles. If that’s what you’re looking for, consider a mini-massager with a shorter stroke length. However, it can still be effective on necks.

Throughout my life, I’ve always been skeptical about foam rollers and post-workout massages. To me, soreness was just a sign of a good workout. However, now in my 40s, that soreness lingers longer, and I find gains more challenging to achieve. A few years back, someone at my gym raved about “massage guns,” but when I tried one in a store, I was underwhelmed by the experience, especially considering the hefty $600+ price tag. As time went on, I read about the physiological benefits but hesitated to invest due to the high costs. Fast forward to this year, and I noticed a drop in prices, with many quality options available for about $200, including this RENPHO model.
I first came across RENPHO when searching for a scale that measured weight, BMI, and bone mass, and the reviews consistently praised their value. As someone who prioritizes value, I purchased that scale and have been impressed ever since. Therefore, when I saw this massage gun from RENPHO, I decided to give it a shot.
It’s essential to note that this device isn’t meant for a relaxing backrub; it can be intense. However, it’s effective for breaking up scar tissue, enhancing blood flow, and relieving muscle pain. Typically, you should use it for only 2 minutes per muscle group, unlike a traditional massager that you might use for 15–30 minutes. (UPDATE: I recently got their heated massager, which is better suited for gentle muscle relaxation. I’ll share more about it at the end.)
This massage gun is designed for professionals like personal trainers and physical therapists. It comes with a convenient carrying case, ideal for moving from one appointment to another. While you can target certain areas like your chest, quads, and calves alone, reaching your upper back, lower back, triceps, glutes, or hamstrings requires assistance. Enlist the help of a partner or friend for a few minutes a week—just let them know it’s a quick session! (UPDATE AGAIN: The RENPHO handheld massager I recently purchased is fantastic for self-massaging hard-to-reach areas, but it doesn’t provide the same deep tissue effect as a massage gun.)
As for functionality, familiarize yourself with the various attachments: the flat head works on nearly any body part, the bullet is great for trigger points and tight areas, while the round head targets larger muscle groups. Start with a lower speed, especially when using the bullet attachment, as it can become uncomfortable if you hit bone. The ridge head is ideal for the spine’s surrounding muscles, while the air cushion head is designed for sensitive areas. Different speeds offer varying therapeutic effects, but I typically stick to what feels comfortable.
Make sure to fully charge the device before the first use; subsequent sessions will depend on how well it was charged initially. The gun feels sturdy, heavy, and powerful, and the carrying case is not only stylish but also practical for keeping everything organized.
In conclusion, if you work out or suffer from chronic pain issues like sciatica, you need this massage gun. It’s an exceptional, portable, cordless, rechargeable device for under $200, a fraction of what similar products once cost. While you may need assistance for certain areas, it’s worth it to “pay back” your helper. This is not a soothing back massager for lengthy sessions, but it’s an invaluable tool for managing chronic pain and aiding post-workout recovery.
UPDATE DEC 2020 I love this device, but I recently sought something for general muscle relaxation. After a long day, I found myself needing relief from sore neck or back pain—not just post-workout soreness. I bought a RENPHO Back Massager with heat, which provides a soothing massage better suited for everyday aches. If you’re considering this massage gun for daily discomfort, the back massager might be a better fit. However, I still use the RENPHO Massage Gun at least three times a week for sports recovery and chronic pain. It’s almost painful in a good way, applying pressure to sore areas and ultimately relieving the discomfort—truly a game changer. I’m thoroughly impressed with this massage gun; it has all the power, attachments, long battery life, and is incredibly effective.

It comes with a diverse range of attachments, from the classic ball to the U-shaped one for the paravertebral muscles, and a bullet attachment for deeper penetration. Unlike other models where speed is adjusted by the pressure on the trigger, this one allows you to select the speed by holding down a button on the back.
